The Village Pharmacy: Why Neem Has Been Trusted for Centuries

Since 1500 BCE, Neem in Ayurveda is described in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, which means “the traditional Indian system of medicine.” Every village once planted one or many neem trees, and for good reason. With the scientific name Azadirachta Indica and nickname “The Village Pharmacy,” every part of Neem is used in some or the other way.

Why Villages Trusted Neem More Than Medicine?

“The overall Neem tree cures some Bacterial, Fungal, and Viral infections. That is why Neem is called Anti-bacterial, Anti-Fungal and Anti-viral too.” Dr Harshal Kothari (Ayurvedic practitioner).

Neem leaves are packed with natural yet powerful compounds like Nimbidin, Nimbolide, Quercetin, and Gedunin. These work together to break the outer membrane of acne-causing bacteria and effectively treat various fungal infections. Compounds such as Nimbidin and Nimbolide, along with Azadirachtin, also help reduce redness, irritation, and swelling on the skin. Meanwhile, the strong antioxidants in the leaves protect the body’s cells from damage, helping the immune system stay stronger and more active. This is why neem baths are traditionally recommended during illnesses like chickenpox; they help pull out toxins, soothe itching, cool the skin, and naturally disinfect the affected areas.

The Power of Neem Bark and Seeds

“Every part of the tree serves a different purpose, but the bark holds a very special place in traditional medicine. While neem leaves purify and neem oil protects, it is the bark that strengthens and restores. In Ayurveda, we often say that the bark carries the ‘backbone’ of the plant’s healing power, quite literally supporting the system both inside and out,” said Dr Vimlesh Sethiya (Ayurvedic practitioner). Neem bark is rich in nimbidin, “a compound that acts as a powerful antibacterial by killing germs around wounds and preventing infection,” said Dr Harshal.

The bark also contains tannins, which help tighten the skin tissues; this reduces bleeding, encourages quicker clotting, and allows wounds to close faster. These tannins also have strong anti-inflammatory effects on the gums, helping them tighten, reducing swelling, and even controlling bleeding in cases of gum disease. In addition, neem bark is packed with polysaccharides that form a thin, protective coating over the stomach lining. This soothing layer acts as a shield against excess acid, reduces internal inflammation, and supports faster healing of stomach ulcers.

Neem seeds contain Azadirachtin, the strongest bioactive compound found in the entire tree. This chemical is what gives neem oil its power. Its strong smell naturally keeps mosquitoes away, and if mosquito larvae come in contact with it, Azadirachtin disrupts their hormones, preventing them from growing, developing, or reproducing. Neem oil is equally effective against lice; it blocks their breathing pores, penetrates their exoskeleton, and eventually dries them out. Along with this, neem oil also treats fungal skin infections and acts as a safe, natural pesticide for plants.

Benefits of Neem for Digestion and Oral Health

Neem flowers, with their mild bitterness, help stimulate digestive enzymes, prompting the stomach to release the juices needed for better digestion. They also have natural carminative (gas-reducing) properties, which help calm an upset stomach and relieve bloating.

The soft pulp of the Neem fruit has mild laxative properties, which help soften stool, support easier bowel movements, and gently cleanse the digestive tract, helping in mild constipation. In addition to this, neem fruits have long been used in traditional medicine for managing blood sugar levels. Compounds like Nimbidin, Nimbolide, Flavonoids, Tannins, and Polysaccharides in the fruit help improve insulin activity, reduce the absorption of glucose from the intestines, and lower inflammation in the body. While neem fruit is never a substitute for medical treatment, it has been used for generations as a supportive and natural digestive and metabolic aid.

“Neem twigs have been used for generations as a natural toothbrush. When the end of a neem twig is chewed, it softens into natural bristles that scrub the teeth and physically remove plaque just like a brush,” said Govardhan Khuje (Farmer). The twig releases antibacterial compounds such as nimbidin and tannins, which kill the harmful bacteria responsible for tooth decay, gum infections, and bad breath. As you chew, the juice from the twig freshens the breath and creates a protective layer over the gums.

Despite all these medicinal benefits, neem also acts as a powerful natural air purifier. Its dense, waxy leaves trap dust, smoke, and harmful pollutants like PM2.5 and PM10, preventing them from circulating in the air we breathe. Stomata on the leaves absorb certain toxic gases and help clean the surrounding environment. Neem, “The Village Pharmacy”, is a reminder that some of the most powerful medicines don’t come from pharmacies at all. They grow quietly around us, waiting to be rediscovered.

Why Climate Action in India Needs Culture to Succeed

While scientific reports and finance frameworks drive formal climate policy, they often fail to connect with the lived realities of local communities. From stand-up comedy about Mumbai’s air pollution to multilingual rap and local folk traditions, culture is emerging as the "behavioral public infrastructure" needed to translate complex data into emotional engagement and collective action.
